U.S. President Donald Trump signed executive orders imposing 25% tariffs on all steel and aluminum imports, eliminating duty-free quotas for major suppliers like Canada, Mexico, and Brazil. The tariffs take effect on March 4, aiming to boost domestic production and reduce reliance on foreign metals.
Trump is also considering new tariffs on cars, semiconductors, and pharmaceuticals, with announcements expected in the coming days. He plans to introduce a North American standard requiring steel to be “melted and poured” and aluminum to be “smelted and cast” in the region to curb Chinese imports.
The U.S. imports millions of tons of steel and aluminum annually for industries such as construction and automotive manufacturing. However, similar tariffs in 2018 only provided a brief boost to domestic production, as demand still required foreign supply.
China recently retaliated against Trump's 10% tariffs with its own trade measures and an antitrust probe into Google (NASDAQ: GOOGL). Despite concerns about a global trade war and rising inflation, Trump stated he is not worried about potential countermeasures.
Investors fear these tariffs could escalate trade tensions and contribute to inflationary pressures in the U.S. economy.
