LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Authorities in New Mexico say a sheriff’s deputy has shot and killed a fellow deputy at a hotel.
Las Cruces police say the shooting took place just after midnight Tuesday at the Hotel Encanto in the southern New Mexico city of Las Cruces. It was not known what sparked the shooting.
Officials say the two Santa Fe County deputies were heading back to Santa Fe after transporting a prisoner to Arizona.
Santa Fe County Sheriff Robert Garcia confirms that one deputy is accused in another deputy’s death. Garcia says his department’s personnel are grieving and that he’s at a loss for words.
Garcia and Las Cruces police did not release the names of the deputies.
